What are the advantages of a linear motor?

Advantages of a linear motor / linear actuator

In addition to the very simple integration of a linear drive in terms of installation size and control, linear drives are also characterised by very low operating costs. A linear motor has a very precise repeat accuracy with consistent movement precision. Linear drives also offer the advantage of a high dynamic function in terms of acceleration and braking (deceleration). Economically, linear motors generate very low operating costs, as linear drives have hardly any wear and require no maintenance.

Areas of application for linear motors

Linear motors have the advantage that they can be operated by remote control from a remote location. For example, heavy loads or switching operations that are dangerous for people can be carried out without the operator being present. In power stations or substations, high voltage is present at many switches. These have to be connected or disconnected from the grid from time to time, depending on the schedule. A linear motor, for example, performs such a switching operation.

Use with sliding doors

A linear motor can also open a large, heavy door for passers-by. Sliding doors, such as those found in supermarkets, are equipped with linear motors, for example. These then slide the glass doors open or, in the case of double doors, apart. A control unit then uses clamping rails attached to the inside of the door to monitor whether a collision or jamming occurs.

Use with boat hatches

Depending on the weight of the boat hatch, you can also use linear drives for boat hatches. These then lift the hatch so that you can access a shaft or, for example, an engine room on a boat or yacht. Boat hatches are often fitted with table or seat superstructures, which can be quite difficult for a person to lift. This is where the linear motor definitely has an advantage. It supports the user during heavy movements and performs them flawlessly.
