Build your own TV lift system

With a Linak lifting column, you can build your own TV lift system. Forget about shaky home-made constructions or cheap Chinese suppliers in your home! Linak lifting columns are of high quality, run very smoothly and function faultlessly for several decades. When building your own TV lift system, rely on the drive and control unit. You can easily make the fittings for attaching the TV to the lift system yourself from wood or metal. However, the drive unit should be designed in such a way that it functions for the long term and is maintenance-free. Fittings such as the TV bracket or the stand for the TV lift system are easy to make yourself. Tubular motors from the DIY store are often very loud and can transmit structure-borne noise. This means that the furniture or bed will amplify the noise. The self-built TV lift system can then become very loud. Linak TV lift columns are very quiet in operation and absolutely maintenance-free! Linak also has its own controls and operating elements with which you can programme the end points for the self-build TV lift system. It is even possible to operate the system using a smartphone app. You can then also connect the self-built TV lift system to your room control system. The control of the self-built TV lift system with a Linak lifting column can be connected directly to a room control system such as KNX, Control4 or others using potential-free contacts and the self-built TV lift system can then be controlled with it. If you have any specific questions about this, we look forward to hearing from you. In recent years, Lineardirect has supplied more than 20,000 TV lift projects in the field of DIY TV lifts. In this blog post, we will inform you about the various TV lift systems available on the market and keep the post up to date.

Update 22/08/2022

Here we show you which TV lift systems are available from Linak and how you can use Linak TV lifts in furniture or floors.

With a TV lift system, you can conceal modern flat screen televisions in furniture or floors. At the touch of a button on the remote control, the TV lift brings the TV out of its unexpected hiding place so that it can be used.

Many TV lift manufacturers use Linak lifting columns, which are then enhanced with TV brackets and other elements. In this way, manual or electric swivels and TV mounts can be attached to the Linak TV lift system so that the TV can be rotated or swivelled when extended. The manufacturer Flatlift offers a wide range of great solutions with Linak TV lift systems. This makes it possible to move the TV not only one-dimensionally, but also multi-dimensionally, in order to be able to watch TV from the perfect location, or rather seat.

How do I choose the right Linak TV lift system? We show you what you need to look out for when making the right choice.

Depending on the TV size, we recommend using different Linak TV lift systems. For example, you can measure the TV height or read it from the technical data of your TV. The TV height is important because the TV lift should always have more stroke (lifting movement) than the TV is high. This ensures that the TV can always be moved completely out of the furniture or floor. Ideally, the TV should be approx. 4-6 cm above the furniture surface. This simply looks best and the Linak TV lift unit is positioned almost invisibly behind the TV. If you want to extend the TV set further, the columns may be too visible. This can be unsightly in many cases. In our shop, you can see the exact lifting height in the product details at the bottom. The installation dimension required for installation is also shown there. The installation dimension indicates how high the retracted Linak TV lift system is. You can then use the installation dimension to plan the clear internal height of your furniture so that the TV and Linak TV lift fit perfectly into the furniture.

Here we show you which ceiling solutions you can use for a Linak TV lift. There are 3 different solutions:

The simplest solution for placing a cover on a Linak TV lift is the travelling, so-called floating cover. The furniture cut-out, which covers the hole in the furniture, is then mounted on top of the Linak Lift system.

A really cool solution is an electrically opening furniture lid. This cover then opens electrically and clears the way for the Linak TV Lift System.

However, it is also conceivable that the furniture lid is attached to the furniture using spring-loaded hinges. When the Linak TV Lift System is released, it simply pushes the lid open and the lid folds backwards by approx. 90° to clear the way. When the Linak TV Lift System then retracts into the furniture, the lid folds back into its original position with spring damping.

Linak TV Lift for floor installation

If you want to install the TV in the floor, you can of course also use Linak TV lifts. However, this has shown that you then need more lift than even the largest Linak drive unit has. In this case, you will have to resort to a solution in which you combine at least two or three Linak TV lift systems in order to realise the larger stroke. If you have any questions, we look forward to hearing from you and will be happy to advise you in detail on this topic.

Build your own TV lift in the living room

If you want to hide a TV in a piece of furniture in the living room, we have various solutions for you. With the Linak TV lift, you can hide flat screens in the living room. These then automatically move out of hiding.

Build your own TV lift

You can build your own TV lift with the Linak lifting columns. Building your own TV lift is actually easy to do. If you want to build a TV lift yourself, all you need to do is select one of these Linak TV lift sets and attach a TV bracket with a small mounting bracket from MediaMarkt.

Here we explain the different types of TV lift and their movements.

All TV lift systems available on the market are divided into 4 different categories.

  1. TV lift for furniture and cabinets

  2. TVlift as a floor solution (floor-integrated, walk-on flap, TV can also be electrically rotated)

  3. TV lift for partition wall integration

4. TV ceiling lift for room ceiling installation

TV lift for furniture and cabinet

The simple one-dimensional TV lift

With a simple TV lift for furniture and cabinet installation, you can install a modern flat screen in furniture or a cabinet or hide it behind existing furniture.

The TV then extends upwards out of the cabinet so that you can watch TV. These products are the most commonly used of all, as the purchase and total project costs in the TV lift do-it-yourself area are very manageable. However, it is also important that you use equipment from manufacturers such as Linak or this TV lift manufacturer, as the product quality here is very high and you are offered additional guarantees and services.

Multi-dimensional TV lift with electric or manual swivelling or central rotation

In addition to the one-dimensional TV lift systems, which only move the TV up and down, there are also TV lift systems that swivel the TV electrically when extended. A distinction is made between the following product categories:

  1. TV lift with central electrical rotation(rotation takes place on edge around the vertical centre axis of the TV set)
  2. TV lift with manual centre rotation

  3. TVlift with electrical lateral swivelling ( the swivelling takes place via the right or left TV side axis.

All TV lift systems listed here can be purchased with electric or manual rotation or swivelling.

Operation via app and room control

You can control and operate the TV lift system from Linak using a smartphone app with Android and iOS devices in a natural and modern way. Set upper or lower end points, program the speed or simply set up to 4 favourite positions. With the Linak app, all this is very easy and intuitive to realise. You can download the Linak TV Lift app free of charge here

If you use a modern room control system such as KNX, Control4, Gira, Opus and similar in your home, you can connect the Linak TV Lift system to the room control system using potential-free contacts. All you need is a suitable relay switch from the room control provider to be able to switch the 5 V of the potential-free output of the control system.

Major differences in quality noticeable even with simple TV lift systems

Every year, Lineardirect replaces a large number of TV lift devices from cheap market competitors that our new customers have purchased on the Internet. From our new customers who have their Internet TV lifts repaired by us, or who buy new ones from us, we always hear the same statements about their defective Internet TV lift systems:

  1. Many devices fail mechanically after just a few weeks.

  2. Plastic slide rails are often broken or the threaded spindles are bent

  3. The electronics of simple Internet TV lift systems fail very quickly or unexpectedly

  4. We also often hear that the cheap Internet TV lifts are very loud and start to rattle a lot during operation.

  5. Very poor customer service, or no customer-friendly response in the event of a claim

All in all, in many cases we can only advise you against buying a TV lift system that is too cheap on the Internet. The initial joy of the bargain price quickly evaporates when the supposedly cheap TV lift system gives up the ghost on a Saturday evening. Ultimately, however, it is up to you to decide which criteria to apply.
