Height-adjustable table for wheelchair users, barrier-free desks suitable for the disabled

Accessibility at the workplace and in the home office

Unlike other colleagues and employees, colleagues who have to use a wheelchair have special workplace requirements. With the barrier-free and flexible modern, height-adjustable desk systems, a wheelchair-accessible working environment can be designed very favourably.

For colleagues with disabilities, access to the labour market is not as easy as for employees without disabilities. In a statistic commissioned by the Federal Employment Agency, among other things, it stated that the employment rate among severely disabled people is steadily increasing, but is still below the level of workers without disabilities. The statistics were from 2017 and represent the current figures. It also shows that just under 47% of severely disabled people aged 15 to 65 have worked. The employment rate of the German population is given as a comparison. This is much higher at 75 %.

There are many different reasons for this. Companies are often reluctant to hire a disabled employee for fear of incurring unknown costs. However, this is unfounded in many respects. It is often possible to create barrier-free workstations with very little effort and little expense, so that wheelchair-accessible working can be realised cost-effectively.

With a height-adjustable wheelchair-accessible desk, the employee can work within the reach zone

The reach zone, also known as the reach space, defines the area that the employee with a disability can reach from one point without changing their position. All work equipment and objects should be available in the reach zone so that the disabled employee can reach them within easy reach. For employees who are dependent on a wheelchair, the reach zone is approximately 38 cm to approx. 140 cm above the floor. This clearly shows that the reach zone is very dependent on the planning and should definitely be included in the workplace design. The result is an optimised workstation design.

The wheelchair should always be able to pass under the desk. A frontal approach without wheelchair access definitely restricts the working freedom of a wheelchair user. This is why there are, for example, electrically height-adjustable desk systems with which you can raise the desk electrically using the control panel so that the wheelchair-bound employee can drive underneath it. This extends the reach zone. This has a positive effect on accessibility within the employee's reach radius. The table tops are electrically height-adjustable and are suitable for table widths of up to 220 cm. If you have a special requirement, we look forward to hearing from you. We will be happy to help you choose the right table frame.

Disabled employees receive benefits for participation in working life from the integration office

Attention: This section only applies to people from the Federal Republic of Germany. If you are from the European Union or an international country (e.g. USA or Canada), you may also be eligible for a subsidy, but you will need to clarify this on a country-specific basis. We recommend that you do a Google search. Search words: Disability allowance through participation in working life.

If you are a disabled person who participates in working life, we have good news for you: you can receive a benefit for participation in working life from the integration office responsible for you. Of course, this not only applies to you, but may also be of interest to your employer. Your employer will also receive certain subsidies for the workplace provided for employees with disabilities. In your case, you can find out how much subsidy you will receive directly from the Office for Integration. However, we have some preliminary information here:

The Office for Integration subsidises a large number of measures. For example, for travelling to work, aids in the workplace, assumption of costs for further training and support for your own home. The latter also includes working from home. For example, an electrically height-adjustable desk for wheelchair users is a technical work aid and is therefore eligible for funding. However, you must note that only aids for professional activities are subsidised. We therefore recommend that your employer writes you a confirmation for use in the home office.

Other technical work aids include, for example, ramps for wheelchair users, special computers for the blind or seating aids or customised orthopaedic safety shoes.

To find out which funding is relevant for you, you can find more information here from the responsible Office for Integration.
