Build your own TV lift with roller shutter drive? - Why we as a specialist company strongly advise against it


The desire to make a television disappear out of sight is widespread today. The idea of building a TV lift yourself is therefore an obvious one. DIY do-it-yourselfers particularly often turn to roller shutter motors or tubular motors, as these are available cheaply from DIY stores and at first glance appear strong enough to move a TV vertically.

However, this approach is dangerous in several respects, legally problematic and technically unsuitable. Why a roller shutter motor is not suitable for TV lifts

A roller shutter motor is designed for a single task: raising and lowering a roller shutter or awning using a tubular drive with a winding mechanism. For the operation of a TV lift, this motor lacks almost everything that makes a safe lifting system.

1. Roller shutter drives run on 230V - without any safety-relevant sensors

Roller shutter motors are operated directly on 230 volts. This means that

  • There is no current monitoring of any kind to detect a change or blockage.
  • There is no speed control or switch-off logic if there is an obstacle in the stroke path.
  • The motor continues to run regardless of what is in its way.

What is a dead man's control?

A dead man's control is a control element that requires the user to hold down a button to keep the machine moving. As soon as the operator lets go, the system stops immediately.
